EXCITING AWARD-WINNING JAZZ CHOIR

Country: Germany
Conductor: Anne Kohler
Voicing: SATB

Pop-Up, Detmold University of Music‘s a cappella vocal ensemble, enjoys rhythm, vocal soundscapes, colourful harmonies, and puts a high value on musical communication and stylistic openness for good music.

The choir performs pop songs, jazz standards, songwriter hits, and folksong arrangements. This ensemble’s work focuses on interesting and challenging choral arrangements, many of which are written exclusively for Pop-Up. The choir rehearses weekly, gives c.20 concerts a year.

Pop-Up Detmold was founded by its conductor, Anne Kohler, in 2010, and in 2012 won the Volksbank’s Junge Kunst (Young Arts) sponsorship prize. The ensemble participated in the Voc. Cologne and Aarhus Vocal Festival (Denmark), and in 2014 was the backing choir for the Rolling Stones in the Dusseldorf Esprit Arena to an audience of over 50,000.

In 2017 Pop-Up won 1st Prize at the Marktoberdorf International Choir Competition, and in 2018 1st Prize at the German National Choir Competition in Freiburg. The ensemble has released three albums and performed on the radio live in concert on numerous occasions.

“Pop-Up combines an outright joy in music-making and a lively, relaxed stage presence with a brilliance of sound and a high degree of technical perfection.” - Georg Grün (German conductor)

The ensemble is excited to share its music with the international audiences at WSCM2020 and is eager to meet with other choirs to learn about their methodologies and approaches to the exciting world of choral singing.
